This tends to be down to a combination of Convection, Schmonvection, Critical Existence Failure and a variant of Short-Range Shotgun game flamethrowers tend to have a very, VERY short range, a narrow area of effect and do slow damage over time with very little disabling effect (or the disabling effect requires enough sustained fire that you may as well use an instant-damage weapon and get the same result in less time and with less ammo consumption), in many cases the effect is very temporary as well and wears off soon after. A smart move considering what she was up against.Considering how, between Kill It with Fire and Incendiary Exponent, fire has a habit of being portrayed as undistilled Rule of Cool, flamethrowers in Video Games have an odd habit of being Awesome, but Impractical at best. This is something Riply clearly understands as when she stormed the nest in Aliens, she attached a flame unit to the side of the pulse rifle so that she would have it on hand. Since a flamethrower burns rather than penetrates, it’s a good way to kill a xenomorph without risking getting your face melted off. Simply put, it’s not wise to use guns on the Xenomorphs unless you are a good distance away from them. The xenomorph also has a high blood pressure so when they bleed, the blood spews rather than drips. For those of you who don’t know, a Xenomorph’s blood is concentrated acid that can eat through several layers of metal within the span of several seconds. Not only do the creatures have a general aversion to the flames but it is able to get around their natural defense mechanisms. The flamethrower is actually the perfect weapon for fighting Xenomorphs. Given that Riply’s most recurring enemy is the Xenomorph, the Flamethrower has been an indispensable tool in her frequent encounters with hostile alien species. Do not fire this against the wind, in a forest or within some kind of structure as you have the potential to trap yourself in a raging inferno which might not be ideal when you have a keg of gasoline strapped to your back. As an aspiring firefighter, I must also stress the dangers of fire as it is a very unpredictable and dangerous element. Alien does take place in the future so maybe it uses a futuristic substance that creates a great effect with very little but if you were to try that design in reality, you would find yourself running out of ammo very quickly. However, it is unclear what kind of fuel source is used to produce the flames and it has never been expressly stated how long it can fire before that source needs to be replaced. The thing is about as small as an assault rifle and is far less likely to explode. Take the Flame Unit from Alien for example. In fiction however, certain variants of the flamethrower are far smaller and more compact, making them much easier to wield. A sniper could easily take a flamethrower operator out with ease. This a major weakness considering that the flamethrower is strictly a mid range weapon. Given that death by fire is a very bad way to go, most enemy troops would turn their attention to a flamethrower operator as soon as they spotted one to avoid said death and take advantage of the possible explosion to take out anyone near the operator. In fact, the mortality rate of flamethrower operators, especially during the world wars, was especially low. It also makes you a pretty big and potentially explosive target. Most flamethrowers sport a back mounted tank to store the fuel and when it’s full, it’s rather heavy. The primary weakness of the Flamethrower it’s the weight. A truly nightmarish concoction that only the world’s most evil organization could have produced. The tar not only provided the fire with more weight, allowing it to be fired over greater distances but the tar added the effect of the fire sticking to whatever it hits. A common mixture is gasoline and tar, which was infamously deployed by the Nazi’s in world war 2. Most flamethrowers use a form of gasoline, usually mixed with some kind of material designed to keep it from burning out too quickly or sticking to targets. The effects of the flamethrower are also dependent on the fuel source. Simply torch the cover and anyone in that little safe zone is now donezo. A common use for the flamethrower is to deploy it upon an enemy who is well fortified behind cover but has no way to escape. As such, it will move around cover and tends to linger. Even worse, fire isn’t a solid projectile. As one of the most destructive natural elements in the world, fire is something you really don’t want being shot in your general direction. The primary strength of the Flamethrower is the simple fact that it throws flames.
